How to Check Hours on a Used Diesel Generator

What does a generator’s hour reading tell you?

The recorded running hours are one part of a used generator’s history. They help you compare individual sets, but they should be considered with age, maintenance, operating conditions and inspection findings. A low reading alone does not establish the condition of the complete machine.

Ask for evidence that identifies the machine

• A clear photograph of the hour display or controller screen.
• The generator, engine and alternator identification plates.
• Available service records, dated inspections and maintenance invoices.
• Information about the previous application and operating pattern.
• Details of any known meter or controller replacement.

Compare dates and recorded readings where records are available. If a display has been replaced, establish what the current reading represents and whether earlier running time is documented. Gaps in the records should be discussed as gaps, rather than treated as proof of a particular total.

Read hours alongside age and condition

A standby set can have limited running time but still need age-related maintenance. A machine used more regularly may have a fuller service record. Neither pattern establishes the better purchase on its own. Request the condition assessment and the preparation proposed for the unit you are considering.

Photographs can help you decide which questions to ask about the engine, radiator, wiring, control panel, fuel equipment and enclosure. They do not replace a suitable inspection or establish the condition of internal components.

Agree inspection and testing separately

Ask which inspections and tests are available, what they cover and whether records will be supplied. A running video can show the set operating at the time it was recorded, but it does not establish the complete operating history. Confirm any witnessed test, load test or further investigation in the written scope before purchase.

Use a balanced shortlist
